...An interesting drive south, cutting across the Po Delta, passing Ravenna, and through the gentle Umbrian hills to Assisi, where St. Francis was born in 1182. Visit the medieval town and world-famous basilica with its beautiful frescoes by Giotto, then head for the "Eternal City" of Rome.(B)
It was a very long driving day today, and in Cosmos tour language this equates to "an interesting drive south"... Apart from a few brief pit stops, we stopped for an hour or so in the town of Assisi which was just gorgeous.
We eventually arrived in Rome late afternoon, and mum & I joined the optional "Treasures of Rome by Night" tour which Janos lead. We got to see some of Rome's major sites including the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain before heading to a local restaurant for dinner. On the way home we passed the Colosseum which looked amazing lit up at night. I've got say that the Pantheon really blew me away - so hard to comprehend that it's been around since the 1st century, and still standing strong...
