After 15 months of anticpation, the battle for the Ashes returned Down Under, with the first test played at the Gabba in Brisbane, which started when we all had to endure the agony of listening the Young Divas sing the national anthem!
The series began in a very comical fashion when, in front of millions of fans watching on television, and a sellout crowd cheering and jeering him to the crease, loose-limbed fast bowler Steve Harmison loped in at the Gabba and bowled one of the worst balls seen in Test cricket in recent times!!! All that anticipation then . . . oops. The ball bounced well wide of off-stump and careered directly into the hands of English captain Andrew Flintoff at second slip with umpire Steve Bucknor signalling wide.
I joined PJ & Stevie B to watch the action from the "Members" and I've got to say that it was a little disappointing that we didn't get to see the Barmy Army in full song. Security was a little over the top, but I guess it must be hard for the powers that be to ensure everyone is happy. Luckily I wasn't thrown out for bad behaviour, which will probably be a surprise for most of you!!!
After Ricky Ponting elected not enforcing the follow on, the Aussies took five days to lead the 2006-2007 Ashes series against England. With proceedings being wrapped up after about 90 minutes of play on Day 5.
Aust 1st innings - Aust 9 dec for 602.
Eng 1st innings - All out for 157 (Glenn Mcgrath, 6 wickets)
Aust 2nd innings - 1 wicked declared for 202
Eng 2nd innings - all out 360 (Clark and Warne - 4 wickets each)
Australia won by 277 runs
